  • Year 5: Which materials are soluble and which are insoluble?

    What a fantastic week in Year 5. The children loved experimenting with different materials to see which dissolved and were therefore soluble materials. They discovered that flour, rice and chalk were insoluble and didn't dissolve in hot water. Please see the Peek of the Week to see what is coming up in Year 5.

  • Year 5: What made Britain such a desirable place for The Vikings to conquer?

    This week the children have been working so hard on writing descriptive sentences. They have been describing the setting and characters from our story with a particular focus on expanded noun phrases, relative clauses and ambitious word choice. We can't wait to hear their versions of the story in a few weeks.

    We have had another really brilliant yet busy week in Year 5. The children really are back into the swing of school now and learning lots. We are so proud of how well they have adjusted to Upper Key Stage 2.

  • Year 5: What did you learn about Vikings on our Viking day?

    We kicked off the week with an amazing Viking day when the children, dressed as Vikings, made shields, trollkers, chanted around a campfire and made runestones from clay. It was busy but brilliant. Thanks to everyone who attended our Welcome to Year 5 session. It was lovely to meet you. We didn't have many parent questions after the meeting but please do not hestitate to contact us if you have any questions.

  • Year 5: What is the best thing about your new class?

    What a wonderful first week we have had! The children have settled into Year 5 so beautifully. They have spent this week really getting to know their new classmates and teachers (and we have really enjoyed getting to know them) as well as the rules and routines. Next week, we will start our timetable properly, so please read the Peek into Next Week for more information about PE days, Forest School days, swimming etc. We will kick next week off with a WOW Viking Day. There is more information about this, as well as Dip and Do homework tasks for this week and important information about when it is due in too.

  • Year 5: What are the features of an OS map?

    Year 5 loved looking at OS maps of different areas of the UK this week. They enjoyed looking at the legend to see what each symbol meant. Next week, they will create their own OS maps of our local area - The Hamptons.

  • How do you demonstrate the Dorchester Values?

    The children all enjoyed meeting their new teachers on Wednesday and are very excited about being at the top of the school. They are all demonstrating the Dorchester Values in everything they do in order to be brilliant role models to the younger children in the school. What a fantastic Year 6 cohort you will be next year!

  • Year 5: What did you learn about the Earth's rotation on our trip to the planetarium?

    We had a brilliant time at the Royal Observatory this week. The children loved sitting back in the planetarium and finding out more about our Solar System as well as learning more about sundials and shadows. They are all keen to make their own sundial back in our classrooms.

  • Year 5: What are the Geocentric and Heliocentric models and how do they compare?

    Year 5 learnt all about the Geocentric and Heliocentric models this week and completed some amazing scientific diagrams. We have also been busy completing assessment booklets. We will share these results with you in your child's end of year report.

    We have a great week back in the classroom after our wonderful camping experience. We are all a little bit more tired than usual, but that hasn't stopped us getting stuck into learning.
