  • What is an adjective?

    Year 1 have had a great start to this half-term.  They have settled in to more structured learning in the morning quickly and have been working very hard. 

    This week in English we have been reading Paddington Bear.  We have been labelling pictures and writing sentences about them.  We have then begun learning about adjectives and the children are beginning to identify describing words that they can use in their writing.

    In Maths, we have been learning our number bonds to 10 and have been using part part whole models and 10 frames to help use.

    In Computing we have been learning how to login to the chromebook and learning how to use Numbots.

  • What have you learnt about privacy?

    This week we have been reading 'We're Going to Find the Monster' in English.  The children made good predictions about what the story was going to be about and wrote some fantastic sentences about the pictures.  In Maths we have explored part-part-whole models and learnt how numbers can be partitioned in different ways.  We have then used them to see how two parts can make a whole.  

    In PSHE we have been looking at what privacy means, what private parts are and what information to keep private. We have also had an anti-bullying workshop which the children all enjoyed.

    Year 1 have worked really hard this half term and we are very proud of the progress that they are making.  We hope you all have a well deserved rest next week, ready to come back for the next half term.

  • What did you enjoy most about our dinosaur workshop?

    This week Year 1 have loved learning about dinosaurs and thoroughly enjoyed the dinosaur workshop on Tuesday.  They got to meet a triceratops, a velociraptor and a t-rex.  They then got to investigate different fossils and match them to the correct dinosaur.  They also got to learn about dinosaurs' diet and investigate coprolite (fossilised poo) to investigate whether they were carnivores, herbivores or omnivores.  The children also got to make dinosaur skeletons out of pasta and moulded clay into dinosaurs.

    In English, we then wrote recounts to describe our dinosaur day, using full stops, finger spaces and capital letters.  In Maths we looked learnt how to use a number line to find more than and less than a given number.

    In Science the children enjoyed participating in a tasting experiment where they used their sense to describe the foods that they ate.

  • Why do Christians celebrate Harvest?

    This week Year 1 have created some brilliant fact files about different dinosaurs.  They used their phonics to sound out words carefully and wrote some very interesting facts.

    We Maths we have been learning how to use a number line to find more than and less than given numbers.  The children were also able to use their knowledge of numbers to find missing numbers.

    In History we have been looking at similarities and differences between different species of dinosaurs.  They grouped them by: number of legs, whether they could swim, whether they were carnivores and many other options.   In Science we looked at different body parts and how they are used.

  • How have dinosaurs changed over time?

    This week the children have been superstars, completing their very first star write! We are very proud of their perseverance with their writing and using their phonics to help them with this.

    In Maths we have been learning about ordinal numbers, and used 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th to describe positions.

    In Science, we learned about some animals’ diets, and used the scientific vocabulary of carnivore, herbivore and omnivore to describe their diets. 

    In Computing the children enjoyed exploring using the BeeBots and are beginning to understand that instructions can be inputted into them for the BeeBots to carry out.

  • Who is Mary Anning?

    This week the children have been reading Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs.  They have been creating story maps in English to help them with their Star Writes next week and practised writing key vocabulary.  In Maths they have been looking at comparing numbers using 'greater than' and 'less than' to prepare them for next week's lessons on ordering numbers.

    In Science we have been looking at the similarities and differences between animals and grouping them by these criteria. In RE we have been looking at different way to show that we are grateful and some of the children have created cards fro their friends of family as a way of showing thanks.

    In PSHE we have been looking at how we can live a balanced life and in History we have been researching Mary Anning and learning about why she is important.

  • What are you thankful for?

    The children have all had another great week and have enjoyed starting our topic ‘Digging for Dinosaurs’.

    In English we have been reading ‘Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs’ and writing simple sentences using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

    In Maths we have been practising our counting and finding one more and one less.

    We have been looking at how we know dinosaurs existed and learning about different fossils.  In Science we have been learning how to group animals by their type.  We have also looked at what it means to be thankful and why it is important to like yourself.

  • Year 1 News - 9/9/22

    What is RRS?

    The children have all settled really well into Year 1 and have had a great start to the year.  We have been learning our school rules: RRS - Ready, Respectful and Safe.  We have then used this to create our own class rules.

    We have been learning about the zones of regulation and how to identify how we are feeling.  We have learnt that it is okay to feel different emotions and have begun looking at what we can do to make us feel better.

    In Maths we have recapped sorting objects and counting numbers to 10.

  • What part of the trip did you enjoy the most?

    The children have had a very busy week. They had a great time on Tuesday at Nonsuch park and were very sensible on the walk there and back as well as when we were in the park. Thank you to everyone who helped us with the trip.
