11+ Tuition at Dorchester Primary

11+ English tutoring sessions for Year 4 children.

Initially, these sessions will support and consolidate the content of the national curriculum but will quickly progress to including those elements that are features of the 11+ entrance examinations to grammar schools and those in the independent sector. High-level writing and comprehension skills are taught over Year 5. During the last few weeks prior to the tests in the autumn term of Year 6, the sessions will focus on improving technique under timed conditions through practice papers.

The English sessions focus on developing writing skills and a sophisticated vocabulary for creative writing and comprehension. High-level spelling, grammar and punctuation are all key features of this.

We should point out that these sessions are for children who have reasonably strong English skills and who will be able to cope with the rigours of the admission process of selective schools; it is not a catch-up group, nor for children who need additional support in the subject. They will be expected to complete homework each week.

Broadly speaking, the children should be at or close to greater depth in their assessments at this stage in Year 4. The session is one of accelerated learning; they will move through topics quickly and it is important to the success and morale of all children in the group that they can move forward together. For the same reasons, good behaviour and a commitment to work hard is paramount.

11+ Maths is aimed at children entering Year 4 and  5 who demonstrate strong mathematical ability.
Course Overview:
In the early stages, we will focus on strengthening core areas of the National Curriculum, particularly place value and the four operations, ensuring a solid foundation in maths. As the course progresses, we will move into more advanced topics commonly found in 11+ entrance exams for grammar and independent schools, including:

• Fractions, Percentages, and Ratio
• Algebra
• Worded and Multi-Step Problem Solving

In the run-up to the exams (typically during the autumn and spring terms of Year 6), the focus will shift to exam technique, timed practice papers, and confidence-building strategies.
Suitability:

This is an accelerated learning group aimed at children working at or near Greater Depth in Year 4. It is not a remedial or catch-up class, and children will be expected to keep pace with a fast-moving curriculum.
