Year 5 – Who was Frida Kahlo?

This week we visited the Tate Modern in London to see examples of Installation Art and to learn about Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). She was a famous Mexican artist who became known for her colourful paintings, especially her self-portraits. She used her artwork to express her feelings, experiences and Mexican culture. When she was 18, she had a serious accident which caused her a lot of pain throughout her life. She began painting while recovering from her accident, often painting herself using a mirror. She celebrated Mexican culture through her paintings, using bright colours, traditional clothing and symbols from Mexican history. We are going to be using her work to inspire our own portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo.
