Year 5 - How often does the Moon orbit the Earth?

This week we have been using a range of balls to represent the Earth, Moon and Sun to show how they are related. The Moon orbits the Earth approximately every 28 days and the Earth orbits the Sun every 365.25 days. Every four years we gain a day, which is why we have 29th February as a leap year. Whilst the Earth is orbiting, it is rotating on its axis. This rotation gives us the difference between day and night. Because the Earth and moon are travelling at different speeds, it means that we see the moon as different shapes in the sky at night. This pattern repeats monthly – called a lunar month. The orbit of the moon also affects what time the sea has high tide and low tide. Who knew so much was affected by all of this? We have also been learning about how our bodies change as we become teens, and how to create print blocks from different materials. Keep your eyes peeled to see the results of this artwork.
