Year 5 How does a compass work?

In the world today we have many gadgets that can support us finding our way around. However, it can still be helpful to know how to use a compass and paper map. We have been reminded of the 8 points of the compass and how to use these with a compass. A compass works through magnets finding North. It can then be used to find other directions from there. In future lessons we will be using these skills to read OS maps and create our own maps of The Hamptons. In other lessons this week we have learnt why people once thought the earth was the centre of the solar system (Geocentric model) and how a man called Copernicus discovered the sun was indeed the centre of the solar system (Heliocentric model).
