Year 5 - Why did Frida Kahlo paint so many self portraits?

Our artist this term is Frida Kahlo. We have discovered that she had an extremely difficult life, overcoming severe illness as a child, which left her weak. This was compounded by an accident which left her recovering in bed from many broken bones. To entertain herself when she couldn't move, she attached a mirror to her ceiling and painted what she could see – herself! She added bright colours, plants and animals to make her paintings more colourful. From her story we have learnt about resilience when facing difficult circumstances. We created a double-page fact file to show what we have learnt. Over the coming weeks we will be learning the skills of sketching and completing a self-portrait. Keep an eye out for the finished pictures.
