Year 5 Were Vikings invaders or settlers?

This week we had a discussion about whether we think Vikings were invaders or settlers. When they first came, they invaded Lindisfarne in 793AD. They stole the religious relics, took captives as slaves and killed many. They were vicious warriors. The Vikings also came at a later date to settle in the northern part of England. They became farmers, married English women and even converted to Christianity, the new religion in England. From historical sources we found out that although they initially came as warriors to invade and steal, they eventually did settle and brought elements of their language and culture to England. So in short, the answer to the question is.... Both!
