Year 4 - Who invented the Lightbulb?

The answer to this question is not as straightforward as you may first think. We have looked at a number of scientists that contributed to this question. Many people think that Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb, but the truth is a little more interesting! In 1802, Humphry Davy made the very first electric light that was used in the streets outside. In 1879, Thomas Edison made a much better version of the lightbulb. He found a way to make it last longer and work safely inside homes. Lewis Latimer worked with Edison and improved the lightbulb by making a better carbon filament (the part that glows). His work helped make lightbulbs cheaper and longer-lasting, so more people could use them. Who knew the simple lightbulb created so much competition! I'm glad Year 4 could shed more light on the situation for you!
