Nursery: What delicious items would you like in a sandwich? What disgusting things would you not out in a sandwich?

This week in nursery we been reading the story of Sam’s Sandwich. In this story, Sam helps his little sister to make a sandwich and she includes some delicious fillings like cheese, egg and tomato, but unbeknown to her Sam includes some disgusting surprises including tadpoles, spiders and worms. The children have been learning and using the vocabulary of delicious and disgusting and we have been talking about the fact that different people find different things disgusting and delicious and that is OK. We carried out some shared mark making in our key worker groups, where the children recorded the different items that Sam included in the sandwich in two lists, a disgusting list and a delicious list. We discussed the different marks that we could use to portray meaning including the shapes and colours that we could use, for example, red circles for tomatoes, pink ovals for eggs etc. Some of the children then drew their own lists independently. Next week the children will be using their purposeful marks to design their own sandwiches which we will then make and eat. We hope that they are delicious and not disgusting!
