Year 3: Why were hill forts important?

Year 3 have loved learning about Iron Age hillforts and discovering why they were such effective places to live and defend! We explored how their position on high ground gave people a better view of the surrounding landscape, helping them to spot approaching enemies. We also investigated how features such as strong wooden fences, steep slopes and carefully chosen entrances made hillforts difficult to attack.
The children particularly enjoyed our practical, hands-on lesson, where they put their knowledge to the test by thinking like Iron Age people and considering how they would design and defend their own hillforts. They had to use their historical understanding to make decisions about the best locations and defensive features, explaining why their choices would help to keep their communities safe.
