Year 5 – Who is Emmeline Pankhurst and how did she change British History?

In History this term we are thinking about people who have changed British History. We started by learning about William Wiberforce and how he worked hard through Parliament to abolish slavery. We discovered that the slave trade was very lucrative in its day and many people were not happy with the changes. This led to a great discussion on why sometimes doing the right things isn't always popular. We have continued this week by learning about the tireless work of Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters. We've learnt about the suffragette movement and how their work led to women being able to vote in Parliamentary elections. Some things we take for granted are only possible because of someone else's hard work. We are looking forward to learning about others who have changed British History in Science, Computing and Literature.
