Year 5 - Why are bees important?

This week we have learnt why bees are so important. We discovered that bees are responsible for pollinating so many plants, including the crops we grow and plants we eat. Without them, we wouldn't have much of the food we eat. They transfer the pollen from the stamen (the male parts of the plant) to the stigma (the female parts of the plant). Once this has happened, this part of the plant can then produce seeds, which means that the plant has then reproduced and can make new plants. Some plants do this by themselves and don't need two different parts. This is called asexual reproduction. In English, we have been thinking about the challenging question of whether animals should be kept in zoos. This question has created lots of great talking opportunities in class.
