Year 5 - Why was the RMS Titanic such a special ship?

This half-term we have been learning about the RMS Titanic. Did you know that RMS stands for Royal Mail ship? One of her main jobs was to deliver mail across the Atlantic Ocean. This obviously didn't happen. As a vessel, she stood out for her four funnels – only three of them were connected to the engine room. The fourth was just for show. We are writing a diary entry based on a fictional character called Grace who was rescued by a First Class passenger and so survived that fateful night on 15th April 1912. In Reading we are reading Kasper – Prince of Cats by Michael Morpurgo. This is about a cat that is transported across the Atlantic on RMS Titanic, with a whole range of characters. We are really enjoying mixing the fiction of the characters with the facts of what actually happened to RMS Titanic.
