29th September 2023

Dear Parents

The children have well and truly settled into the new term; they are thoroughly engrossed in their learning, their co-curricular activities and their leadership responsibilities.  We have had lots of children sign up to the Mini Duke/Micro Duke and Junior Duke programmes and look forward to the booklets arriving and seeing the children acquiring new skills as they complete the activities.

This half-term we are looking at the value of Responsibility, and it has been lovely to see our new Prefects, Class Ambassadors, Junior Leadership Team, Junior Supremo Sports Leaders and Eco-Council members show such pride in their new roles and rising to the responsibilities that these roles bring.  Our Faith Ambassadors, Language Ambassadors and Young Interpreters are ready for their duties too.  At Dorchester, we believe that children thrive with responsibility, and we are aiming to further expand the number and nature of the roles we offer as the year progresses.

We look forward to meeting with parents and carers, and sharing news of how your child is progressing in our Parent Consultation Meetings the week after next, on Wednesday and Thursday for most year groups.  Booking will open on Monday evening - you will receive an app message to let you know when the system is open for bookings.  We know that children love it when parents are involved in their education and it has a positive impact on their future learning, so please do make an appointment.  The book fair will be running in the hall and you will be able to view your children's work (also in the hall) before your appointment.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Have a lovely weekend.

Headteacher for a Day

Alana in Year 6 was the winner of our guess the staff baby photo competition at the Summer Fair.  Her prize is the honour of being Headteacher for a Day, and this will take place on Friday 13th October.  Alana and her nominated Deputy Head, will do gate duties, lead parts of assembly, meet with Governors, take a Learning Walk around school, give out Headteacher Awards, host Chocolate Milk Tea and write the newsletter- all while I put my feet up for the day!!  Do look out in next week's newsletter for information from her about whether she wants her day in charge to be a non-uniform day, along with any other information she might want to share ahead of her day at the helm.

Summer Holiday Reading Challenge

Next Friday (6th October) in our Celebration Assembly (beginning at 8:55am) we will present Summer Reading Challenge certificates to those children who completed the challenge at the library.  If you would like to come to assembly and see your child/ren get their certificate/s you would be very welcome.  If your child has been given their certificate already because they use a different library, they can bring it in too so it can be presented to them.

Open Events for Prospective Parents

We have several Open Events running throughout the Autumn Term for parents looking for places in Nursery or Reception for September 2024.  If this applies to you please register for one of the events using the link below.  If you know anyone else who is interested in finding out about all we have to offer here at Dorchester, please share this information with them.  Thank you.

Making the most of Play

Did you know that children spend much more time at play than they do studying either Maths or English, yet often schools put much less thought into planning it?

Well, not at Dorchester! As a part of our commitment to children’s personal development, and a desire to ensure they make the best of all their time here at school, we will be starting the process of reorganising our outdoor play spaces next week.

As you also may know, we have seen the Scrapstore playpod's installation recently, and are now waiting for it to be filled with its first load of scrap bits over half term which means that playtimes will be transformed! In light of this, we thought it would be great to start diversifying and redesigning how our outdoor spaces are used in general, in the first step on our journey of playtimes becoming more inclusive, purposeful and fun for all.

The first play zones which will commence next week will be a 'Team sports zone' and a 'Creative play zone', with more zones to be designed, developed and introduced to the playground throughout this term and beyond.

The creative area will involve lots of chalk drawing and quiet games, tough trays with various bits to be artistic with and paper and crayons. Ideas are welcome to be suggested by all of the Dorchester community!

We cannot wait to start revolutionising our outdoor spaces, and our Junior Leadership Team (new name for school council!) will work together with the school community over time to develop and organise new play zones over the next few terms.

CLASS REPS

FODS would like to say a massive thank you to all the parents/carers who have come forward to be a class rep. Being a class rep for your child’s class is extremely helpful not only to the parents/carers of that class but also to the school & FODS. Class Reps help relay information to the parents/carers from FODS & the class teacher. They also help ensure stalls are filled with helpers for school fairs. We currently still need Reps for some of the classes, we would really appreciate if someone could volunteer for the following classes:

BUTTERCUP, TOPAZ, EMERALD, FERN, SAPPHIRE, INDIGO & PURPLE

If you can be a Class Rep for one of those classes, could you kindly e-mail us at: dorchesterpta@gmail.com

Lunch Menu

We apologise for the disruption to school lunches at the current time whilst we work to get the gas extraction system fixed.  Assuming we can cook next week - this will be the menu - in the meantime, our caterers will continue to broaden the lunch offer to make sure the children have access to a good variety of options.

Our menus are available here.  Next week is Week 2.
