Dear Dorchester Families,

There is much excitement in school as preparations are underway for the Christmas Fair tomorrow.  It is always a real highlight of the year, with lots of games and activities to participate in, a giant inflatable, roasting marshmallows, bauble decorating and someone mentioned mulled wine and Bailey's Hot Chocolate too!  The weather outside is set to be frightful, so make sure you come along to enjoy the delights of the fair. - and huge thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help out on the day.

We also won't let the wind and rain dampen our spirits as we head to The Hamptons for the annual Christmas lights switch on event.  The event begins at 5pm at Maple Lodge in The Hamptons, and our Junior Choir will be adding some festive cheer to the event.  Do join us there if you can.

Look forward to seeing you at the fair tomorrow.

Polite reminder about toys in school...

In order to make things simpler for all children, may we please remind all families and children that any type of toys (e.g. slime, fidgets) are not to be brought into school. Some children may be provided with something similar in line with decisions made in conjunction with our SENDCO, and this would be a carefully planned strategy to aid learning. Other than that, we would like to keep the school toy free, please, as they often distract from learning,  get lost, lead to disagreements or end up causing unnecessary mess.

Thank you kindly for your cooperation.

Mr Dennis

Nursery: How do you make a repeating pattern?
We have been continuing to discuss the Nativity story and thinking about why Christmas is an important celebration for Christians. The children have learnt most of our nativity songs and are making the links between the songs and the story. They have all learnt the Makaton actions and understand how...

Reception: Can you find objects that are longer or shorter than your foot?
What a busy week we have had. We started the week by reading the story of the Nativity. We related it to the lines that the children are learning for their performance, to help them see the whole story come together. We have also been practising our lines and learning the songs with Makaton signing...

Sleep hygiene in children and young people

This information sheet from Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) explains about sleep hygiene. The lead-up to and routine around your child’s bedtime is referred to as ’sleep hygiene’. Having good sleep hygiene can help your child to settle to sleep and to stay asleep. There are several things that parent/carers can do to help and we have listed some of these below.

Children of different ages require different amounts of sleep. In 2016, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) produced a ’Consensus Statement‘ regarding the recommended amount of sleep for children and young people.

The table below gives an indication of the amount of sleep your child needs on a regular basis to keep them healthy.

Your child’s age Recommended sleep time in 24 hours
Infants 4 to 12 months 12 to 16 hours including naps
Children 1 to 2 years 11 to 14 hours including naps
Children 3 to 5 years 10 to 13 hours including naps
Children 6 to 12 years 9 to 12 hours
Teenagers 13 to 18 years 8 to 10 hours

Technology

The use of electronic devices (such as televisions, mobile phones and tablet computers) close to bedtime can prevent your child from settling to sleep. This is because they produce light that is good at suppressing natural hormones in the brain that cause sleepiness.

Ideally, these devices should not be used in the hours before bed and removed from your child’s bedroom to create an environment that your child associates with sleep.

If your child uses these devices to help them fall asleep, consider replacing this routine with a bedtime story or playing soothing music.
