Dear Dorchester Families

It was lovely to see so many members of our school community at the Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial on Sunday.  Valerie (Lavender Class) deserves special commendation - not only for the beautiful way she read her Remembrance Poem, but also for her quick costume changes from her Guide uniform into her school uniform and back into her Guide uniform, so she could represent both organisations.  Well done Valerie!  Thank you to Harry, Joshua and Luke for laying the wreath on behalf of us all with such respect too.

We held an Armistice Day assembly in school on Monday and came together shortly before 11am to remind children of the significance of the day.  We then watched the TV coverage from the Service at the Cenotaph in London and joined the two minutes silence.  The children were so respectful - 2 minutes is a long time for especially our youngest children - and it was a delight to see.

Thank you to the very many families who joined us for our Around the World event after school on Monday.  There was an amazing array of activities being shared that really brought our geography learning to life.  Thank you to Mrs Rankin for organising the event, the teachers and children for producing such excellent work and to everyone who came along.

It has also been anti-bullying week this week.  Children in Key Stage 2 participated in a BBC Live Lesson to mark the week. The  children learnt how to play fair, work together, and show respect.  The 30-minute lesson inspired our children to handle disagreements constructively and resolve conflicts positively - such important learning.

Our Early Years children looked simply superb today as they celebrated their Nursery Rhyme Day, and came to school dressed as one of their favourite Nursery Rhyme characters.  We had everything from Incy Wincy Spiders to the doctor who had to come 'quick, quick, quick' when Mrs Polly's dolly was sick.  Please see the Year Group information below to read more about what they got up to.

As well as being a busy time in school, it is also a busy time for FODS, with Sparkle Parties, Sparkle Discos and the Christmas Fair coming up.  Please read through all the information below to make sure you know what is happening when, and support our school as much as you can.  We are really grateful for your support.

Have a lovely weekend.

Can you help to unlock more opportunities for our children (at no cost to you)?

Did you know that by applying for free school meals, you can help unlock additional funding and support for our school, even though your child already receives free meals through the Mayor of London programme? It’s true! Submitting a free school meal application is a simple step that can make a big difference for our entire school community.

Why Apply If Meals Are Already Free?

It is fantastic that all of our children now receive a free school meal, regardless of their family income. However, when eligible families complete the free school meal application, it enables the school to access essential funding known as pupil premium. This funding is used to:

  • Provide additional academic support such as tutoring and extra resources.

  • Enhance extracurricular programs like sports, arts, and music activities.

  • Offer pastoral care and mental health support for students.

  • Improve classroom equipment and technology to create a better learning environment for all.

As well as Pupil Premium funding, the school gets further benefits:

  • More money in the school budget

  • Improved eligibility for grant programmes, many of which we can only apply for if a threshold of pupils is known to be entitled to free school meals

  • Even if you are only eligible for a short period of time (eg. you are between jobs), the school continues to get Pupil Premium funding for six years after your eligibility ceases.

And you get further benefits too:

  • Food vouchers during holiday periods
  • Reduced charges for Residential Visits
  • We may be able to help you with costs of extra curricular activities and trips
  • Free places at different activity clubs run across the borough during school holiday periods

The Application Process

Applying for free school meals is quick, confidential, and hassle-free. Simply visit https://www.sutton.gov.uk/w/apply-for-free-school-meals or contact our school office for assistance. Even if you’re unsure of your eligibility, we encourage you to apply – the process helps the school identify additional support opportunities.

A Small Step With Big Impact

When families apply for free school meals, it’s a win-win. Your child’s meals remain free, and our school gains crucial resources to help all children thrive. It’s a simple action that has a ripple effect on the quality of education and support we can provide.

Even if you feel you don't need this additional money to support your child, remember that it helps everybody in the school, so please complete the application form.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this important step. Together, we can ensure our school continues to be a place where every child has the opportunity to succeed.
