Year 5: Bikeability

Some of our Year 5 students took part in a cycling proficiency course called Bikeability this week, which now means they have learnt to safely cycle on the road. The children really demonstrated the Dorchester Values, and we received some lovely feedback from the instructors.

The children really enjoyed their writing lessons this week. They enjoyed building sentences using metaphors, similes, alliteration and personification, firstly with their learning partner and then writing a descriptive paragraph independently using their bank of wonderful ideas. Great creative writing Year 5! This image was generated by AI after it analysed a piece of writing, written by a child in Sapphire class.

Please make sure you have been following the Year 5 residential updates on social media! The children had the best time, and we were so lucky with the beautiful weather. We can't wait to all get together next week and share information about their experiences, whether on residential with The Bushcraft Company in Kent or at school doing school-based activities as well as bowling and swimming.

The Year 5 children are really enjoying their new topic 'Rivers' and enjoyed having the freedom to research any river of their choice using websites and reference books this week. The children are excited about their upcoming stay at Penshurst Place next week. The children really enjoyed writing descriptively this week, focusing on the use of senses and figurative language. They enjoyed seeing their writing entered into an AI image generator in order to see their writing come alive.

We are looking forward to a jam-packed last half-term with our Year 5s. We have booklets to complete, the residential to look forward to, bike-ability for some and a wonderful final topic on Rivers. It is going to be a fantastic last half-term to this academic year. Of course, we will also be spending some time preparing and transitioning the children into their new Year 6 classes and their final year at Dorchester. How time flies....

The Year 5 children really enjoyed the classroom discussions about VE day this week. They shared stories of their great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers and their roles in the war. They were fantastic supporters of their little friends during the drone activity too. Well done Year 5.

Year 5: Did you like going to school in Victorian Times?

We kicked off the week with a trip back in time to the Victorian era. The children experienced life in a Victorian school. They had a day full of the 3R's (Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic) as well as still life drawing and drills. The children were pretty shocked by how strict the teachers were and didn't like some of the punishments given out. Thank you for coming to watch Indigo's class assembly. The Year 5 children enjoyed reading Oliver Twist this week. They used 'Show not Tell' and ambitious and era-specific vocabulary to write paragraphs about the workhouse dining hall. Fantastic writing Year 5!

We are going to be entering our final term of Year 5 in a few weeks. Can you believe it? It will be a term where we will be preparing the children for Year 6 and working on key skills in reading, writing and maths in order to send the children to Year 6 ready for their final year in Primary School. We will also be learning about The Victorian era. A topic the children always love! Don't forget to prepare your costume for Victorian day!

Year 5: Geography fieldwork in The Hamptons.

Year 5 enjoyed exploring The Hamptons, this time with a map in hand. They followed the map to find key places of interest: the amphitheatre, the community centre, nature reserve, play park and car park. They carefully marked these places on their maps. The next step is to create OS style maps using this information.

Year 5 had a wonderful experience at North Cheam Baptist Church this week. The immersive, engaging experience really brought The Easter Story to life for our children. It is such a highlight of our year. Thank you, Sutton Schoolsworks.

We absolutely loved reading the story 'Leaf' as part our World Book Day Project this year. The children wrote some amazing character descriptions. Well done to Sanaya and Manu who read their writing in assembly on World Book day. It was wonderful to see so much effort made with costumes. Thank you for all of your support. Year 5: What did you learn from the Space Dome?

The children loved the Space Dome this week. It was fantastic to experience a planetarium from the school hall. The children learnt lots of facts about the planets and the earth's rotations around the sun. It was a fantastic way to launch the topic. We loved our Food Tech day in Year 5 on Monday. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed ingredients; it really made a huge difference. Thank you to Sanaya's mum, Sienna's mum, Hala's mum and Oscar's nan who helped us massively with filling jars and washing up. We really appreciate you giving up your time. We look forward to next half term. Our new topic is Earth and Space.

Year 5: An epic day at Hampton Court Palace

Year 5 had a wonderful day out on Thursday at Hampton Court Palace where they took part in a Tudor Workshop about the jobs people had in the palace. Hearing more about John Blanke, the black trumpeter, who the children learnt about in school made it very special and memorable. Thank you to the parent volunteers, who helped out on this great day out.

The Year 5 children have learnt a new mathematical strategy over the past week - 'the bus stop method' or short division, and we are so proud of their progress. Seeing the lightbulb moments and the connections being made around the classroom has been so rewarding. Well done Team 5.

Year 5: How does your family make Spaghetti Bolognese?

The children really enjoyed adapting the traditional Bolognese recipe this week by using ideas they have seen their families use at home or ideas from cooking websites. They also used the Eatwell plate to check that their bolognese still had food from all the different food groups and looked at alternative sources of protein for beef. Good job year 5. We look forward to our cooking day coming up soon.
