Year 1: How did we make our spider sculpture?

In Art this half term, we have been learning about 3D sculptures. The children enjoyed making a class spider sculpture based off of Louise Bourgeois ‘Maman’ Sculpture. The children used the skills of rolling to create the sculpture out of paper and then painted it to look like a spider.

In PSHE, we have been looking at people who help to keep us safe, such as police officers, firefighters, teachers, doctors and dentists. The children then drew these people to create a poster for us to include in our PSHE learning book.

In Year 1, we have been designing and creating our own ‘Tree of Life’ Sculptures. The children have used the paper skills they have been learning during Art lessons to create these. We have also enjoyed investigating measuring and comparing mass in Maths using scales.

Year 1: How is the Jewish festival of Chanukah celebrated?

In Year 1, the children enjoyed celebrating World Book Day. We loved seeing all of their costumes. In RE, the children investigated how the Jewish festival of Chanukah is celebrated. They learnt that it is the festival of light and each day they light a candle called a Menorah.

Year 1: What did the first castles look like?

In Year 1, the children have enjoyed beginning our topic all about castles. They have learnt that the first castles were called ‘motte and bailey’ castles. These castles were built on a raised mound of earth, called a motte, with a wooden or stone building on top, and an enclosed courtyard, known as the bailey. They then drew their own versions of a motte and bailey castle.

What a busy half-term we have had! The children have loved learning about our oceans topic and especially loved going to Sea Life to see all the sea creatures. This week, the children have enjoyed decorating their puppets and are looking forward to bringing these home to show you. We hope you all have a restful and enjoyable half-term.

In Year 1 this week, the children enjoyed creating posters about protecting the oceans and keeping them free from rubbish to help protect sea creatures. They have also worked hard on their Star Writes (independent writing) and are looking forward to sharing these with you at the next parents’ evening.

In Year 1, we have enjoyed finding out which features a letter needs to include and identifying these in an example. The children have discussed which sea creature they are going to write a letter to over the next couple of weeks.

Our highlight of the week was our trip to Sea Life. The children represented the school fantastically and loved spending the day exploring the different sea creatures.

Yr1 - How can you program the Bee-Bot to go in different directions?

In Year 1, we had lots of fun exploring how to make the Bee-Bot go in different directions and even spin around! We have also been learning about questions in English and started our book ‘Barry the Fish with Fingers’. Questions need to start with a question word and end with a question mark.

This week in Year 1 we have introduced our new topic of Oceans. The children designed their own sea creatures to add to our display. We have been looking at number bonds to 20 and being able to recall these quickly. In writing, we have been reading ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ and recognising rhyming words.
